Backpack Safety: How to Protect Your Child’s Spine This School Year

As summer winds down and the new school year begins, backpacks come back out of the closet — often loaded with textbooks, laptops, water bottles, and sports gear. Most parents don’t give the backpack a second thought. But a bag that’s too heavy, packed incorrectly, or worn the wrong way can place real strain on a child’s growing spine.
The good news is that protecting your child’s back doesn’t require anything complicated. With a few simple adjustments, you can help prevent the posture problems, back pain, and neck tension that many kids quietly carry through the school year.
At MVP Chiropractic & Physical Therapy, we help families in Chicago and New Lenox keep their spines healthy at every age — and back-to-school season is one of the best times to start.

Why Backpacks Affect a Child's Spine

Children’s bodies are still developing, which means their muscles, joints, and spines are more vulnerable to repetitive strain than an adult’s. A backpack that’s too heavy or worn improperly forces the body to compensate — and over time, those compensations add up.
When a backpack is overloaded or poorly balanced, several things can happen:
  • the shoulders round forward
  • the head shifts in front of the body
  • the lower back arches to counter the weight
  • muscles on one side work harder than the other
Carried day after day, these patterns can lead to:
  • neck and shoulder tension
  • upper and lower back pain
  • headaches
  • poor posture habits that follow kids into adulthood
Because children rarely complain about “posture,” these issues often go unnoticed until discomfort sets in.

How to Protect Your Child's Back This School Year

1. Watch the Weight
A loaded backpack should weigh no more than about 10–15% of your child’s body weight. For a 70-pound child, that’s roughly 7 to 10 pounds. If your child leans forward to carry the bag or struggles to put it on, it’s too heavy — time to clean it out.
2. Use Both Straps
Slinging a backpack over one shoulder is one of the most common habits, and one of the hardest on the spine. Both padded straps distribute weight evenly and keep the shoulders balanced. Encourage your child to use both, every day.
3. Adjust the Fit
The backpack should sit snugly against the back, with the bottom resting near the waist — not sagging several inches below. Straps should be tightened so the bag stays close to the body rather than pulling backward. If the pack has a chest or waist strap, use it for extra support.
4. Pack Smart
Heaviest items — textbooks and laptops — should go closest to the back, with lighter items toward the front. Using the different compartments keeps the load balanced instead of shifting to one side.

Simple Habits That Make a Difference

Beyond the backpack itself, a few everyday habits go a long way toward protecting your child’s spine:
  • Have your child bend at the knees to lift the backpack, rather than bending at the waist
  • Clean out the bag weekly so it doesn’t quietly accumulate weight
  • Encourage regular movement and stretch breaks after long study sessions
  • Consider a rolling backpack if your child carries an especially heavy load
  • Check in about any complaints of back, neck, or shoulder discomfort
Small, consistent choices help keep minor strain from turning into a recurring problem.

How Chiropractic Care Supports Growing Spines

Even with the right backpack habits, kids can develop posture imbalances or muscle tension — especially as they grow, sit through longer school days, and add sports to the mix.
At MVP Chiropractic & Physical Therapy, we help identify and address issues early, before they become long-term problems. Our care can help improve:
  • spinal alignment and posture
  • muscle balance and flexibility
  • range of motion
  • overall comfort and movement
Combined with physical therapy and therapeutic massage when needed, gentle, age-appropriate chiropractic care helps children stay comfortable, active, and healthy throughout the school year.

Back-to-school season is the perfect time to build healthy habits that protect your child’s spine for years to come. A properly fitted backpack, a few smart routines, and early attention to posture can prevent a lot of discomfort down the road.
