Sciatica

What is sciatica?

Sciatica receives its name from the sciatic nerve which travels from the gluteal region down the back of the thigh before splitting into multiple smaller nerves. Sciatica is caused by inflammation or compression of the sciatic nerve at one or multiple locations along its path. Causes of inflammation and compression can include but are not limited to:

  • Disc protrusion (bulging)
  • Disc herniation
  • Muscle/tendon compression
  • Scar tissue

Symptoms common to sciatica are sharp, lightning-like pain that starts in the low back or buttock that can travel down the back of the leg. Some patients suffering from sciatica also note achy pain, muscle weakness, and muscle spasm in the low back, buttock, and affected leg.

What can you do about it?

Treatment for low back pain and sciatica are improving every day. First-line therapies focus on reducing inflammation and pain as efficiently as possible. Therapies utilized in this stage include: spinal manipulation, physical therapy exercises, and stretching of tight tissues. After symptoms subside, therapy combines stabilization and mobilization patterns unique to the patient in order to prevent future episodes.

When should I seek care?

There is a possibility that sciatica may resolve on its own but it is important to seek care to understand the cause of sciatica. It is important to get an exam and treatment if your symptoms are getting worse or changing. Therapy can drastically reduce the amount of time patients are affected by symptoms. Examination by a professional can also provide insight into potential causes and solutions.
